AIM- Sketching a G+1 floor residential plan as per the Vaastu Shastra and calculate the load acting on the building as per IS code.

    Points to be noted:

    • Entrance door is facing North direction
    • Living room is in front of the entrance door.
    • Dining room is besides the Living room. Infront of kitchen door. No wall is provided in between living room and dining room for better space and aesthetics.
    • Kitchen is placed in the south east direction
    • Master bedroom is in south east direction or south direction.
    • Puja room is in the east direction
    • Toilets are not provided near entrance and are in the South and south west direction.
    • The toilet wall which is sharing with kitchen can be used for storage purpose and cooking can be done on the opposite side.
    • Staircase is in the north east direction.
    • All doors open inwards
    • All rooms are rectangular in shape

The structural drawings required to be provided to the site for construction are:

    • Centre line drawing
    • Column and footing layout with all dimensions and reinforcement details
    • Bar bending schedule with reinforcement details
    • Plinth beam layout with reinforcement details
    • First floor beam layout with reinforcement details
    • First floor slab layout with reinforcement details

    Load Calculation:

All sizes of structural elements (column, beam, slab etc) are to be assumed

Let size of columns be 300x300 mm

Let size of beams be 300x300 mm

    Slab thickness 150mm

    height of wall is 3m

    Dead Load Calculation:

    • Columns:

    Height of column= 3m

    Column size = 0.3x0.3x3

    Total volume of column= 0.27 m3

    Unit weight of concrete= 25 kN/m3

    Dead load of column= unit weight of concrete x volume of concrete = 25 x 0.27 = 6.75 kN

    • Beams:

    Total cross section area of beam = 0.3 x0.3 = 0.09 m2

    Unit weight of concrete= 25 kN/m3

    Dead load of beam = unit weight of concrete x area of concrete = 25 x 0.09 = 2.25 kN/m

    • Slabs:

    Slab thickness = 150mm = 0.15m

    Unit weight of concrete= 25 kN/m3

    Self weight of slab = unit weight of concrete x thickness of concrete = 25 x 0.15 = 3.75 kN/m2

    • Walls:

    Height of wall = 3m

    Wall thickness = 300mm= 0.3m

Unit weight of brick wall = 20 kN/m3

    Self weight of the wall= unit weight of the wall x thickness of wall x height of wall = 20 x 0.3 x 3 = 18 kN/m

    Live Load calculation:

As per IS 875 (part-2) table 1, for the residential building use live load of UDL (uniformly distributed load) as 2 kN/m2

For Staircase, UDL of 3 kN/m2 is provided

For slabs, UDL of 2 kN/m2 is provided.

    Wind Load calculation:

    Total height of the building = 3m+3m = 6m. 6m<10m

Since the building height is below 10m. hence wind load calculation is ignored.
