                                                                                                  FENDER DESIGN

OBJECTIVE:

  • Creating the fender flanges from the fender skin data received as input, later assigning the points for various fender mountings.
  • Follow the master section for the drip area mounting received as input .
  • Thicken the component.

FENDER

Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside).

Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

Sticky materials, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects, such as stones, can become temporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.

MOUNTINGS OF FENDER:

  1. DRIP AREA MOUNTING
  2. SILL MOUNTING
  3. A PILLAR MOUNTING
  4. BUMPER MOUNTING
  5. FLASH MOUNTING

DRIP AREA MOUNTING:

  • This is the mounting which is connected to the engine compartment through flanges having holes.
  • Precise design consideration must be taken in order to avoid the spring back affect when vehicle in use.
  • This is important mounting and most of the vibration from the engine compartment must be dampen by this mount.
  • Darts must be provided in order to strengthen the flanges with continuous blend edges.
  • embosses must be provided to increase the strength by increasing the polar moment of inertia.

BUMPER MOUNTING

  • BUMPER is the plastic component made up of ABS (having high impact resistance).
  • The emboss must be created in order tp provide the strength.
  • This mounting is necessary at the time of front collision to distribute the impact precisely and reducing the affect to the pedestarian.

SILL AREA MOUNTING

  • Sill mounting is required to mount the fender with the bottom portion of the door .
  • This mounting has emboss to strengthen the component.

FLASH MOUNTING

  • This mounting is done to connect the fender with the baffle plate to withstand the mud or tiny particles while vehicle in motion.

A- PILLAR MOUNTING

  • This mounting is done to connect the A-pillar of the car with the fender.
  • This is also called as body mounting and necessary space must be provided for the assembly.

ALL CURVES AND DATUMS USED FOR MOUNTING:

  • Here we have used the intersection curve and bridge curve for creating the surfaces using offset on the face command of NX curve workbench.
  • Datums are created individually for all the mounting and required sketches for the embosses.
